No tips, goals or resolutions for you in 2012!

January 19, 2012
Dear friends and colleagues

I am somewhat reluctant to start off the new year reciting 10 tips for the new year, and 25 goals for success in 2012, as I have received one too many of those lately which frankly leave me cold! Call me unambitious or overly cynical, but I tend to be one who discourages new year's resolutions for clients (because they seem to set them up for failure) and a 5 year plan, because predicting the next 5 weeks seems near impossible in these times! (Ask me I'm a mum!)

That being said, I've been reading Steve Jobs' biography - shew what a wade! I'm almost through and don't know whether I've quite made up my mind as to whether he was an innovative genius or a tantruming tyrant! I guess the truth lies somewhere in between? Robin Sharmer picks up on his work in his new year tips, namely, "Be 'Apple-Like' in your obsession with getting the details right." Well I want to do that, so right up front I would like to get my distribution list right. I've recreated it this year and my intention is to make monthly contact to share what I have been reading/doing/researching and hopefully offer something that is useful and interesting to you. If that's not you, then just let me know by sending me an 'unsubscribe' email.

So let's start 2012 out on the subject of leadership. And yes I do believe that we are all meant to lead, whether we have the designated title or not. DDI's (Development Dimensions International) Global Leadership Forecast reveals an interesting statistic where global respondents indicate the top five most critical skills for leaders in the future. Number one is "fostering creativity and innovation" - a mouthful in itself and difficult to achieve when under stress. But interestingly, "Coaching and developing others" came in at number two. This is the area in which I work and about which I am passionate, and I am a firm believer in doing what you can internally as well as seeking the input of outside expertise. So how do we begin to foster the ability to coach and develop others?

My first suggestion is that for the next 30 days, you focus on what Imago therapy terms, 'affirmations'. Go out of your way to look to encourage and support others, particularly in the work place. Everyone (even Steve Jobs) needs encouragement and it is scarce in our critical world. Obviously it needs to be authentic and preferably "in-the-moment positive feedback", to motivate those around you, but be aware of those opportunities. And while on the subject, look for those moments with your children, your partner and ultimately yourself.

Wishing you much success in 2012

Travel, team building and teething troubles!

November 23, 2010
I have recently finally relented and entered into the world of 'social networking'... But rather than attempting to 'tweet' an update in 150 words, I'll stick to my commitment of a single screen update!

What has been on the go?
Since I last wrote, 2009 has been filled with opportunity and challenge! I have maintained a number of coaching clients, predominantly new managers who are looking to acquire or strengthen key management skills.  When things looked somewhat on the quiet side in April/Ma...

Suffering from SARS

November 23, 2010
I have decided to formally register a new syndrome, from which I confess suffer greatly; it is called 'send and receive syndrome'! I find myself almost addicted to the need to click the mouse, regardless of whether I am working on something important or merely drifting past my study!

I was reminded of all those good time management principles of turning one's mail off when working on important tasks, and leaving mail to be answered once to twice a day outside of one's peak thinking times...ha...

Stop your work avoidance behaviour

June 8, 2010

Published on DestinyConnect, October 2009

Sometimes when you reach the office the last thing you feel like doing is actually working. But like it or not, you’re paid to do a job and if you want to succeed in your career it’s time to focus on the tasks at hand. We turn to facilitator and business coach, Karen Grant for advice on how to stop avoiding work.

Why avoid work?
If you find yourself constantly avoiding work, you need to examine the reasons behind your behaviour. You may just be a c...

Any space which is not consumed by high priority things, get filled by low priority things...

June 8, 2010

I was challenged recently by a statement that went something like this email's subject - I won't tell you who said it, but the challenge could be applied to time, to money or to any of our precious resources. And maybe mid-year is a good time to be looking at that? It is hard to believe that we are almost halfway through the year already and almost two school terms down!

World Cup Spectacular or corporate cop-out?

Things are certainly hotting up as we enter into June, with soccer spirit in ...

The cobbler's children

February 23, 2010
I have often recalled the expression of the cobbler's children having no shoes, because he is so busy making shoes for his customers! To some extent I plead guilty, since as a facilitator, trainer and coach, who specialises in effective communication, I have had a 'place holder' stuck up on my website for over a year now, with the intention of developing it!

Well that time has come and with the help of my talented designer, who developed my 'corporate' identity, www.karengrant.co.za is finally...
